From Deactivated to 2.6x Traffic in 4 Months

Helping a marketing agency bounce back after getting dropped by Google

The Client

A digital marketing agency based in Austin, Texas. With a marketing analytics and reporting emphasis, they use data-driven strategy and analytics to help their global client base succeed in marketing and beyond..

The Problem

In 2022, this digital marketing agency saw their organic search traffic grow month after month. By the summer they had nearly 1000 monthly views on their Google Business page. But as the calendar flipped to 2023, that organic traffic took an abrupt nosedive.

This client reached out to us in March 2023 to get to the bottom of—and hopefully fix! —their sudden SEO problem.

Our initial audit found that the agency’s Google Business Page had been deactivated due to a bug after Google’s latest algorithm update. The agency had also been flagged for potential black hat SEO techniques, which meant it would take some extra effort to get them back up and running.

The Strategy

This presented an unusual case. We knew we had to get creative with a solution. After our audit and strategy session, we outlined a three-step process to restore this client’s search traffic back to it’s glory days:

  1. Contact Google Support

Before we could implement our SEO strategy, we had to get their business page reactivated. We contacted Google support on the client’s behalf, talked through the issues, and were able to get the business page back up and running.

  1. Technical SEO Audit

While awaiting Google reactivation, we identified several back-end issues that could hold back their SEO efforts. We combed through their entire website to make sure everything aligned with SEO best practices. After reactivation, we repeated the process with the Google Business Page and their Listing Management Software, Yext. We ultimately transitioned them to our listing management program, that is a more comprehensive Local SEO approach.

  1. Content Production

Getting deactivated dropped them to the bottom of the search rankings. To get the agency back to their old traffic levels and beyond, we knew we had to be aggressive with content.

We started publishing new content on the agency’s business page three days per week. With a focus on content that emphasized their unique services and regular media library uploads, the agency started seeing traffic increase almost immediately.

The Results

+159% GBP Views in 4 Months

+31% GBP Interactions in 4 Months

This client’s traffic surged just four months after reactivation with regular content updates. Between March and July of 2023, the agency’s Google Business Profile views jumped from 237 to 615—a 159% increase. Profile interactions went up 31%, from 61 to 80.

With their back-end SEO fixes and new content calendar, this agency’s organic traffic should continue to grow month-over-month.
